FOOTBALL

A variation of American football. Instead of tackling by dragging an opponent to the ground, flags are worn around the waist and have to be removed. The objective is to score points by advancing a ball by throwing and/or catching a ball into an end zone.

History

Traced to early forms of soccer and rugby.

United Kingdom Mid 19th Century—Games involving a ball being run over a line or kicked a goal

United States Early 19th Century—Versions' known as "football" in colleges and universities

 

Blitzing– Rushing the quarter back behind the line of scrimmage immediately without counting ( No Blitz-ing in our class). Completion- A successful catch that is in front of the line of scrimmage.  A run doesn’t count as a completion towards a first down.

Defense-The team that does not have possession of the ball .

Down-One Play of the ball (try) four downs (4 tries) are allowed to score a touch down or make a first down . You can run the ball or the quarterback throwing the ball counts as a down.

Center- The person who hikes or snaps the ball .

End Zone- The scoring area within the goal line and end line and sidelines .One at each end.

First Down- 2 successful Completions is rewarded a first down (again a run doesn’t count as a completion towards a first down & if you do not catch the ball past the line of scrimmage it doesn’t count as a completion to-wards a first down ).  After you catch the ball you can not throw the ball Forward again.

Fourth Down- If you don’t get a first down and use up all four downs the other team gets the ball from that spot.

Fumble- The ball carrier drops the ball when it is in their possession.
